The “future” classroom may be closer than you think. With the advancement of augmented reality technology and the small impetus the epidemic has given to distance learning, universities and schools in Brazil and around the world are starting to explore Metaverse resources. Sold as the next “revolution” for the Internet, virtual reality space was created in the 1980s and, among them, it is possible to buy land, hold meetings, watch shows, play football and take classes with avatars. which is sealed for you. .

While not really a new thing, Metaverse is back on the radar after Mark Zuckerberg, owner of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram mentioned the name Meta and said this is his next gamble. This combination of the Matrix world with the players in the game The Sims comes to a Brazilian education.

One of the first classrooms of its kind was launched last week at the FIA Business School, which began teaching in the Metaverse. Teachers use virtual reality glasses to teach, while students who do not already have the device can access the online space via a video call.

“For them it was an incredible experience. It is not the ‘high’ world we are talking about but another world. Students can participate from home, lying in bed, when taken to class. There he walks, talks, applauds and interacts with his colleagues, while I write on the board, make presentations and ask questions, ”explains Alessandra Montini, director of Labdata nucleus at the FIA, responsible for creating the space.

He said he spent ten days together with his colleagues to create this virtual classroom. It only took three to four hours to get the remote control.

Despite the eye -catching and negotiation, Alessandra noted that this is one of the biggest challenges for Metaverse teachers. “The student is happy because he is sitting and watching. For the teacher, he has to know the subject by heart, follow the reaction of the avatar to see if the student understands or not, control the available technological resources… Teaching is like a marathon class in the metaverse. You have to stay for about 15 minutes and then rest, ”he said.

Companies and universities from China, the United States, Mexico and some parts of Europe have invested in training and education specifically taught in virtual reality. Among the benefits, they highlight the ability to receive students and staff from all over the world.

Last month, USP also entered the game and became the first Brazilian public university in Metaverso, through an international cooperation agreement with Radio Caca (RACA), which gave the institution the NFT (unusable mark). The aim is to promote research on the application and technical, economic and legal aspects of the virtual reality world.

This NFT means that the USP has acquired “rare earths” in its own Metaverse developed by the United States of Mars (USM), the online “country” created by RACA. In practice, Brazilian institutions can use this “virtual land” to build a place to communicate. But, before that, it is necessary to find qualified workers to produce the fashion and the money needed to pay for it. “At the same time, our goal is to attract people and ideas to build a space and things in it,” explains Marcos Simplício, an associate professor of computer engineering at the USP Polytechnic School.
